As heat wave sweeps across Michigan, many will see impact of summer peak electric rates

As Michiganders grapple with scorching temperatures this week, special electric rates meant to lessen strain on the grid and promote energy savings are in effect for millions of residents.
For many customers of the state’s largest electric utilities, DTE Energy and Consumers Energy, the warmer months mean higher rates, including peak pricing during certain parts of the day meant to encourage users to lower energy usage when demand is high.
