Hydro

Improve Efficiency

Hydropower has a long and storied history in the United States, being one of the earliest sources of large-scale electricity generation. The first commercial hydropower plant in the U.S. began operations in 1882 in Appleton, Wisconsin, harnessing the energy of flowing water to generate electricity. Throughout the early 20th century, the construction of large dams and hydropower facilities, such as the Hoover Dam and the Grand Coulee Dam, marked a period of significant growth for hydropower. These massive projects not only provided substantial electricity generation capacity, but also contributed to flood control, irrigation, and water supply.

Hydropower has been surpassed by wind energy, but remains the second largest source of renewable electricity in the country, contributing nearly 6% of total U.S. electricity generation. The potential for growth lies in the modernization and upgrading of existing facilities, incorporating advanced technologies to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impacts. Additionally, the development of small-scale and micro-hydropower projects presents opportunities for expanding hydropower capacity in a more environmentally sustainable manner.

Hydropower’s ability to provide reliable baseload power and rapid response to fluctuations in electricity demand makes it an ideal complement to intermittent renewable sources. Moreover, pumped-storage hydropower, which involves storing energy by pumping water to an elevated reservoir during periods of low demand and releasing it during peak demand, offers a valuable solution for grid stability and energy storage.
