Augmented Reality and Emerging Technologies for Utilities Workshop

Immersive technologies (augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality, etc.) are being touted to utilities as the next “big thing”. How much of that is real and how much is hype? This one-day workshop will delve into the aspects of immersive technology that will help the utility executive understand that question. Topics are presented to inform the utility executive what is critical in understanding the technology and the potential impact without endless jargon and unnecessary information. Presentations will include slides, videos and animation to present a fast-paced, upbeat, journey into grasping all one needs to know to succeed in immersive technology for utilities.
Learning Outcomes
- Assess the historical overview, current trends, and future applications of immersive technologies
- Review immersive technologies in the electric utility context
- Articulate the value proposition of using immersive technologies at a utility
- Be able to implement the leading practices in VR, AR and MR including design, prototyping and deployment
- Discuss how to leverage immersive technologies in utility initiatives such as improving resiliency and training younger workers

- Discuss how to develop a practical critical framework for evaluating current and emerging immersive reality technologies and applications

EUCI is accredited by the International Accreditors for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) and offers IACET CEUs for its learning events that comply with the ANSI/IACET Continuing Education and Training Standard. IACET is recognized internationally as a standard development organization and accrediting body that promotes quality of continuing education and training.

Dr. John J. Simmins, Executive Director for Research and Economic Development, Alfred University
Dr. John J. Simmins is Executive Director for Research and Economic Development at Alfred University. In this position, he oversees approximately 100 research faculty and graduate students in various areas of research. In addition, he directs the efforts of the NYS Center for Advanced Ceramic Technology (CACT) as Executive Director. Simmins is also partially responsible for bringing jobs and opportunities to western NY and in particular Allegany County, one of the most underserved counties in NY State.
Dr. Simmins is an expert in the intersection of augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and geospatial information systems developed while he was at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) where he was employed for the 10 years before becoming Executive Director. While at EPRI, Dr. Simmins managed several augmented reality projects all over the world. While at EPRI, Simmins was one of the founding members of the Augmented Reality for Enterprise Alliance (The AREA). He is currently an advisor for Ethar, an open source platform for developing and deploying device agnostic immersive technology experiences. Prior to EPRI, Simmins was responsible for IT systems to support engineering and operations at Southern Maryland Electric Company (SMECO).
Kyle Robertson, Senior Engineer, Evergy
Kyle joined Westar Energy (now Evergy) in 2007 as a project engineer, soon growing through its distribution team as an operations supervisor and staff engineer. Most recently, Kyle became the Senior Engineer, Substation Maintenance. Kyle received his BSME from the University of Kansas and associate degree in Pre-Engineering.
Victor Carr, Advance Technology Program Manager, Austin Energy
Victor Carr is currently the Program Manager over Advanced Technology at Austin Energy. In this role Victor develops and manages new technologies for the Electric Utility. This includes advances in electric grid communications, UAV (drone) management, Augmented Reality / Virtual Reality (XR), new year Datacenter planning, wildfire mitigation, and research coordination with higher education institutions. Before that Victor served in numerous management positions at Austin Energy including as a Division Manager, Technology Control Center Manager, and Comm systems Manager. Victor graduated with a degree in Political Science and Criminal Justice 1995.

Your registration may be transferred to a member of your organization up to 24 hours in advance of the event. Cancellations must be received on or before January 15, 2021 in order to be refunded and will be subject to a US $195.00 processing fee per registrant. No refunds will be made after this date. Cancellations received after this date will create a credit of the tuition (less processing fee) good toward any other EUCI event. This credit will be good for six months from the cancellation date.
