PG&E bills to soar next year after regulators approve 13% rate increase Thursday

Monthly bills for Pacific Gas and Electric Co. customers will climb even higher next year after California regulators on Thursday unanimously approved allowing the utility giant to increase its rates for electricity and natural gas to cover the cost of burying power lines and other measures aimed at reducing the risk of catastrophic wildfires sparked by its infrastructure.

The state Public Utilities Commission, or CPUC, announced the decision in a news release following a public hearing Thursday on the proposed increases, despite both Republican and Democratic state lawmakers speaking out against the higher rates.
