TVA preparing to start up new gas-powered turbines at former Alabama coal plant

Seven years after the last of the coal-fired generators were shut down at the Colbert Fossil Plant, the Tennessee Valley Authority is preparing to start up three new natural gas combustion turbines at the Alabama plant to help meet its peak power demands across TVA’s seven-state region.

TVA fired up the first of the three new gas turbines this week in an initial test. TVA is spending about $500 million to build the three new gas-fired turbines at the Colbert plant near Tuscumbia, Alabama, capable of generating 750 megawatts of power at the former coal plant site, or enough power to supply more than 400,000 homes with electricity.
